시놉시스

Referencing the diary of freedom fighter, Kim Dae-lak, Nae-ap is an epic tale portraying a group of the Kim clan community and their fellow freedom fighters in different villages of Andong during the Japanese occupation. The film focuses on the day of their departure, Dec 24th, 1910, as they seek asylum to West Gando, China to organise an independence army against Japan. The story is also told from the perspective of Kim Lack, the sister of Kim Dae-rak, who resisted against Japan from her hometown. Lack’s husband also came from a family with a background of serious independence movement.

연출의도

Studying in the U.K., I found out many artists I’ve met there worked with historical stuff. I was especially inspired by Hunger, Steve McQueen’s first feature. Its imagery and subject matters had a huge impact on me. I was vaguely interested in working on a film centered on the independence movement during the Japanese occupation with no particular genre in mind. I used to lead a film production group, Red Carpet Spirit, and made 3 films with them. This film, Nae-ap, is now my fourth. The beauty of ‘blank spaces’ in traditional Korean paintings is what I often wanted to emulate in films, although I wasn’t sure whether it would be possible. It wasn’t sure until I read the diary of Kim Dae-rak that I decided to be the core motif of the film. The memories of my hometown, the Nae-ap village, are weaved into Mr. Kim Dae-rak’s life in 1910.

리뷰

이 영화는 1910년 경술국치가 시작되자 발생한 일련의 사건을 다룬 전기영화에 해당한다. 일반적으로 전기영화는 실제 있었던 사건을 바탕으로 극적 재구성된 작품을 일컫는다. 본 작품에서 가장 중점으로 맞추고 있는 사건은 일제의 경술국치 이후 중에서도, 특히 독립군 양성을 위해 자신의 고향을 떠나는 내앞 마을 김대락 일가의 이야기에 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 영화는 산모를 대동하여 12월 엄동설한을 뚫고 길을 나서는 척박한 과정을 과장되지 않게 다룬다. 이에 연출자인 김인근 감독은 감정을 자극하는 요소를 철저히 배제한 채, 당시 조선시대 안동 문중들이 처했던 상황을 담담하게 재연했다. 그들의 상황에 조응이라도 하듯 영화는 최소한의 대사와 내레이션만을 활용하여 전기영화의 미덕을 보여주었다. 다른 한편으로 이 작품의 또 다른 장점은 조화롭게 연출된 미쟝센에 있다. 혼란스러운 시기의 모습을 보여주듯 인물들의 의복은 한복과 양복을 혼합적으로 사용해 복식 면에서 자연스러웠으며, 이에 더해 배우들이 사용한 언어 또한 그 시절 안동 지방 사투리를 그대도 옮겨온 것처럼 생생하게 살아있는 듯 보인다. 이는 분명 시각디자인을 전공한 김인근 감독의 장점이 십분 발휘된 지점일 것이다. 그러나 무엇보다 이 작품의 미덕을 가장 높이 끌어올린 것은 어떠한 극적효과도 없이, 내앞 마을의 풍경을 그대로 스크린에 담아낸 것이다. 이 장면은 그 어떤 열 마디 말보다도 오랜 시간을 버티며 모든 사건을 지켜봐 온 대지의 기억을 환기시키기 때문이다. <내앞>은 시간과 기억을 담아내는 이미지의 힘을 짧은 시간 안에 보여준 작품이라 할 수 있다.
